Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral group consisting of 40+ mineral types (clinoptilolite, chabazite, phillipsite, mordenite, etc.). Clinoptilolite, or "Clino" for short, is the most abundant and commonly used Zeolite mineral.
"Clino" and other zeolite minerals occur naturally in rock formations throughout the
world. Zeolites are natural volcanic materials with a unique crystalline lattice structure. When volcanoes erupted their ash on ancient lakes, millions of years ago, the resulting chemical reaction of the ash and alkaline water altered the ash into various forms of zeolite crystals. The crystals are a special combination of silicon, aluminum and oxygen.
What is so unique about these crystals is that they have a honeycomb structure of pores and channels. These pores are extremely small - varying in size from 2.5 to 5.0 angstroms across (an angstrom is 1/10,000,000th of a millimeter). The thousands of tiny passageways in a single particle provide a surface area that is amazingly large.
